One of the biggest challenges in life is to find your purpose and live it. It might even seem like groundhog day every time the new year rolls around. Setting goals is important for many reasons, like to identify your priorities, focus your energy, and take action. So we are here. It’s 2022 and many people are setting goals for themselves. We all know that achieving them can challenge you to your core at times and this is why it’s important to set realistic goals and set yourself up for success from the start.
18 coaches give their best tips to use as your comprehensive guide to goal setting and mindset tips when setting your new year’s resolutions.
- Goal set in baby steps. If your goal is to eat less processed sugar but you currently eat foods high in processed sugars regularly then try going without these sugary foods one day every week. Start with a goal that feels so easy that there’s no way you couldn’t achieve it! Once you’ve gotten into a habit, up the ante! Now go to two days and replace the foods with better alternatives. Whatever the next baby step is, go for it! Amber Clarke, Founder & Mindset Coach, Miracle Mindset Coaching.
- Visualise yourself achieving the goal and really lean into what you can see, hear and feel so that you not only get your mind invested and focused on your goal, but your body, heart and soul too. Crystal McKendrick, Progression Coach
- First step would be to set your intentions. Get clear on what it is that you want to achieve. I would recommend journaling on it for a while. Find a peaceful place to write out what your intentions for the year are. Don’t worry about the how at first. First get crystal clear on what it is that you want to achieve. Kate Leurs Coaching
- Use the one minute rule. Even if it’s hard to get started – do it for one minute – 1 minute of exercising, take one minute before reacting to your children etc. Everyone can do something for one minute. Vanessa Stuart, CEO and Founder of Total You Coaching
- Working backwards in goal achieving is a wonderful tool. Consider where you want to be this time next year and then break down your goals backwards, what do you need to achieve by 9 months to be at your 12 month mark and then half yearly to be at the 9 month mark. This gives you the momentum and drive as you are already at your goal when planning and it ensures it’s achieved if you follow your steps from now to then as mapped out! Kelly Stevens, SK Synergy Solutions, Executive Coaching
- Your smile is your logo. Your personality is your business card. How you leave others feeling after an experience with you is your trademark. Lead. Manage. Inspire the fire within. Amber Duscher, Founder, The Retail Sales Coach
- Switch your goals to habits. incorporate it into your everyday life. Put in 1% everyday towards your goal/habit. If your goal is to hit 10,000 steps a day, and you only hit 6,000 you still put in the effort to get your steps in. And another, don’t label happiness as a future thing. So many people say “When I lose x amount of weight I’ll be happy”. Happiness is a feeling, not an end result. Instead, switch your mindset to show more gratitude and do things in your everyday life that allow you to feel happy. Maddy Stephens, Founder of MaddyStephensCoaching
- In 2022 check your words. Everything you say to yourself is imprinted so when you say anything about who you are – be mindful of what you say. Make 2022 your breakthrough year where you choose words of encouragement and kindness when describing YOU. Dimitra Thanis, Founder, Mandio Consulting
- Give everyday the chance to be the most beautiful day of the year. Start your day right, find a routine that makes you shine from the inside out and not keep you pressing the snooze button. Jennifer Ulyatt, Founder, Kefi Coaching & Training
- Do a life audit. Go through your weekly routine and see what brings you joy and what doesn’t. Review what you are feeding not only your body but your mind – social media, music, news – take notice of what saps your energy and what brings your energy. Then start to switch in more things that bring you energy/joy and as much as you can reduce/remove those things that bring you down. Nicki Fischer, Founder, Brave Spirit
- Be clear of your goals, have action steps, know the obstacles you will face on the way to achieving with s2o (solutions to overcome). Stan Nelson, Moving Forward Coach

- It’s always good to take a moment to review your last year before setting your goals and priorities for the coming year. What were you proud of in 2021? What was missing that you would like to prioritise in 2022? After you have thought about your broad goals and dreams – start each week with setting three personal and three professional goals. This allows you to avoid overwhelm and track your progress towards your bigger goals over time. Rachel Low, Resolve Learn Create Coaching
- Take five to consider where you are and how you came to this place, see the wins. Now consider where you would like to be in twelve months time. Once you have a clear picture in mind identify the small steps you will need to DO to HAVE the goal; break it down into manageable steps working backwards (from the future to now). Then just start taking one step at a time and enjoy the ride! Jess Burchell, Wealth Mindset & Success Coach, Tillow Coaching & Consulting
- Get out of your comfort zone! Get used to being uncomfortable. Change will never happen while you stay comfortable, it happens when you move intentionally in the direction of those things that give you butterflies and nerves and make you feel like you don’t know what you are doing.
