Editorial on Brexit: The lunatics are running the asylum

A shadow looms above a nation that was once a Great Britain and a United Kingdom.  This is the shadow of mediocrity, self-interest, ignorance and political weakness.  This shadow has crippled the country and is leading us into an abyss from which we will struggle to emerge.  Over the past three years many of us have looked on in shock and dismay at the nightmare represented by Brexit.  The mere fact that we could even consider isolating ourselves from our European neighbours and, consequently, our strongest trading and political partners, seemed inconceivable. And yet, here we are.  The lunatics are finally running the asylum.

The arguments against Brexit are too many to list here.  The fact that most people who voted for Brexit have changed their minds once they realised the consequences of their actions need not be stressed.  The pro-Brexteers were lied to by wealthy, Oxford and Cambridge educated rogues who, quite frankly, should have known better. Most of these pro-Brexit political campaigners are independently wealthy or earning bloated salaries.  They will not be affected by the dire consequences of their actions.  The average low level politician in the UK earns £77,379.  This figure will remain the same no matter how many jobs are lost because of Brexit.  No matter how many people die because of the shortage of medical staff in the NHS.  No matter how many businesses are forced to close because of the trade barrier Brexit creates.

The truth is, nobody who cares about the future of our country wants Brexit to happen.  But sadly, the incompetent, self-serving professional politicians with their antiquated tribal allegiances, their outdated philosophies of left and right, red and blue, Tory or Socialist, refuse to seize the reins and save our country.  That’s why it’s up to you.  It’s time for ordinary people like you and me to stand up and stop this runaway train.  Because, believe me, if we fail to act now, when our country needs us most, we are condemning this generation and the next to a country that is far from great or united.

Quite recently over 1 million people demonstrated in London to protest against Brexit.  But my question is what can you do?  Are you prepared to act?  If so, I would like everyone reading this editorial to write to their MP today and demand immediate and effective action against Brexit.  If they refuse to act, we’ll sack them and find new and more worthy representatives.

Copy and paste this letter into a document and send it to your MP:

Dear (name here),

As one of your many constituents against Brexit, I formally request that you make clear your opposition to Brexit and take immediate action to avert the crisis leaving the European Union will create.  Should you fail to do so, I am serving you notice that you will be removed from office at the earliest possible opportunity and held accountable for your inaction.

Humbly yours,

Now is the time to act.  Your country needs you.
